Finding Meaning in Connection: Reflections from the Inaugural Meaning & Purpose World Summit
In May this year, I had the privilege of attending the first-ever Meaning & Purpose World Summit in Lisbon—a gathering that left a deep imprint on both my heart and mind.
Bringing together a diverse global community of academics, researchers, coaches, and practitioners, the summit was a powerful convergence of people dedicated to understanding and fostering meaning and purpose in human life. From keynote talks grounded in the latest well-being science to intimate discussions among peers, the energy in the room was one of shared values, open hearts, and a deep desire to create change, both within ourselves and in the world around us.
What struck me most was the range of voices and perspectives: from those leading cutting-edge research in positive psychology, to practitioners working on the ground, developing initiatives that support communities in finding purpose, resilience, and hope. The variety of ideas reminded me that meaning isn’t one-size-fits-all, it’s layered, personal, and deeply human.
For me, the summit reaffirmed something I often witness in my own work as a coach: that meaning and purpose can be powerful elements of well-being. They sustain us, especially in moments of uncertainty or adversity, and can anchor us in something deeper than our day-to-day roles.
I left Lisbon not only inspired, but more committed than ever to help others explore their own pathways to meaning. Whether through coaching, community, or conversation, small steps toward clarity and purpose can lead to powerful transformation.
